MASONS HELP HOSPICE FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Each December United Hospice of Rockland sponsors a unique and meaningful fund raising effort affording the public an opportunity to make a donation and place a star on a Christmas Tree in memory or in honor of a loved one(s). The Hospice TREE OF LIFE is a veritable mini-forest of illuminated Christmas trees "growing" in a prominent location in the busy Palisades Center shopping mall in West Nyack, NY.
The Masons of Athelstane Lodge of Pearl River, NY years ago "adopted" United Hospice of Rockland as one of their favorite local community charities deserving their financial and "hands on" support.
This year 19 members of the Athelstane Lodge family "team" contributed more than 77 hours over a pre-holiday weekend (December 17), in what certainly couldhave been leisure time, to staff the UHR TREE OF LIFE fund raising booth and they successfully raised more than $4,400 to benefit the vital community based work of Hospice. This was significantly more than the $3,700 the Athelstane Lodge team riased in 2010 and the $3,200 collected in 2009.
Among the local Masons and Athelstane :Lodge "team" members who volunteered were Dotty and Mal Blotner, New City; Ron Pomerance, Montebello; Phil Nelson, Spring Valley; Seth Lee, New City; Mark Burke, Warwick; Al Oster, Wanaque; Susan Helfgott, Pomona; Sandra Joy, New City; John and Stephanie
Gebbia, Pearl River; Chandra Tidwell, Pearl River; Doug Ward, New City; Mel Birnbaum, Bardonia; DeMolay youth group members Simon Kramer and Raymond Cannarozzi, Oradell; and the Master of Athelstane Lodge, Howard Whitman, New City.
The combined efforts of the Masons on this one day resulted in a total $4,418.95 collected for United Hospice of Rockland. This was in addition to more than $1,000 previously donated to Hospice for their Pediatric "HEALING HEARTS’ program According to The Master of Athelstane Lodge, Howard Whitman, this holiday effort demonstrates one of the significant contributions local Masons make each year to further important deserving community based charitable organizations.

NEW CITY LIBRARY
Quilts and bobbin lace abound in the exhibit areas at the New City Library. In the Meeting Room, there are hanging quilts that range from traditional patterns to very current designs. The colors are bright and bold. In years past, castles had huge tapestries adorning the walls as a way to reduce drafts and the cold temperatures. Though not drafty, the library is able to accommodate quilts that are 10 feet in length. One special quilt created by Carol Higgins is a tribute to the late Dr. McGuffie, physician and advocate for better health in Africa. The exhibit was organized by Mary Jane Sexton and all quilts are on loan from county residents.
The second exhibit is in the four cases and features the very old craft of bobbin lace. The sample pieces are from the Manhattan Chapter of the International Old Lacers. Bobbin lace is created from very fine thread that is wound on small finger bobbins. Using a pattern, the bobbins are moved within following the design pattern.
